MY STUDENT DIGITAL NOTEBOOKS
I just want to give a shout to all teachers this school year. We were all the "FIRST" to have to scramble to have a year to teach virtually (full remote) and hybrid in the mince of this pandemic. You are all ROCKSTARS! I started creating DNBs with inspiration of those online educators posting and sharing to INDB Facebook groups. I love that there are so many great teachers willing to share their own digital notebooks on these sites. We are all definitely a TEAM during a very unique and crazy school year.
Many of my DNBs are creations and modifications of already shared notebooks, collaboration with some amazing coworkers in my district, resource materials from old textbooks and CK12 (online textbook resource). Lots of searching and image editing. Many great images are contributed from the Amoeba Sisters science videos.
There are so many great resources are out there. Thank you to everyone who shares and creates. My hope with sharing my DNBs and resources is to help other educators out there that need it. We are in this together! Thanks again.

Introduction to the Nature of Science
NATURE OF SCIENCE
This DNB is a basic introduction of the NATURE OF SCIENCE - different branches of science, thinking like a scientist, etc
*Teacher presentation link updated 1/26/23* Nature of Science test includes lab tools and equipment, lab safety, observations vs inferences, scientific method and experimental design - added 1/26/23
CER- CLAIM EVIDENCE REASONING
Here is a basic activity to teach the students CLAIM EVIDENCE & REASONING
SCIENTIFIC METHOD PRACTICE
*Link updated 1/26/23*
Many science teachers have used educational materials from SCIENCE SPOT. This DNB is based on their SpongeBob Scientific Method lessons. |
Lab Safety
This DNB introduces science equipment & tools, and lab safety rules & scenarios,
NOTE: This needs a lot of editing and improvement for next school year. This was the "beginning" of me figuring out how to use DNBs. *Link updated 1/26/23* THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD
PART 1: This reviews the scientific method and introduces the science and engineering practices. PART 2: Observations vs Inferences, Variables, Experiment Examples, Data, etc. *Link updated 1/26/23* - Teacher Presentations added My district has a paid subscription to Generation Genius. I really enjoy the resource. I showed my students their grades 6-8 "What is Science? video as a introduction to scientific thinking and reviewing the scientific method
Metric SystemThis is a brief overview of the Metric System.

Introduction to Life Science
Characteristics of Life
This DNB focuses on "WHAT IS LIFE?" - not only the characteristics of life, but focuses on organization, homeostasis, and internal & external stimuli, etc.
*Links updated 1/26/23* Interactions of Living Things
This introduces ecosystems, ecology, biotic and abiotic factors, biological levels of organization, and an introductions to some ecology topics such as populations, communities, biosphere and biomes.
*Links updated 1/26/23 |
Levels of Organization
This is a basic introduction teaching about the levels of organization
*Links updated 4/13/23* |
Classification
This DNB discusses and defines organization, the history of classification, Domains & kingdoms, binomial nomenclature, scientific name, and dichotomous keys.

CELLS

CELL TRAVEL BROCHURE ACTIVITY
When teaching cells (when in-person) I would normally have my students make a tri-fold travel brochure comparing a travel location to a plant cell. Using analogies to compare cell organelle's to their location parts/amenities. I found the project years ago when I first started teaching. I modified the project and created a digital version to be created in a google slide presentation. It's simple. But a decent digital alternative. A small activity for the students to review the parts of a cell, and to make connections to it's function. *Links updated 1/26/23* |
CELL PROCESSES
CELLULAR RESPIRATION
This DNB is a basic introduction of Cellular Respiration
MOVING CELLULAR MATERIAL
This DNB focuses on the structure of the cell membrane, diffusion, osmosis, etc.
*NEW LINKS added 4/2/23* Teacher Presentation pairs with Student Note Packet |
PHOTOSYNTHESIS DNB
This DNB is a basic introduction to Photosynthesis Cells and EnergyThis is a teacher presentation that focuses on Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration in one lesson. No DNB included with this.
*NEW LINKS added 4/2/23* Teacher Presentation pairs with Student Note Packet |
PHOTOSYNTHESIS EXTENSION ACTIVITY
I found a good article online discussing "what if photosynthesis stopped?" - so I created a google slide presentation (short DNB) from the article. I wanted to have the students think about the essential question "Why is photosynthesis important to all living things?" - after they read the slides I am having my students create a short story. This is to give the students the opportunity to be creative and use their imagination while thinking about the importance of photosynthesis. (writing in science! ) This is a teacher presentation that focuses on learning about the macromolecules and the cell theory (new)

CELL GROWTH and REPRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION TO
DNA DNB This DNB focused on the structure and history of DNA. Much of this DNB can be contributed to other DNBs shared by other educators. I made various modifications to it and made it my own. Thank you! *Links updated 4/2/23* Updated Teacher Presentation pairs with Student Note Packet |

GENETICS
Introduction to Genetic DNB.
I focused this lesson at introducing genetics/heredity, describing Mendel's experiments in detail and led them into dominant and recessive traits. *Links updated 4/13/23* Teacher Presentation pairs with Student Note Packet |
Genetics Continued DNB
This DNB focuses on genes and alleles. It teaches about dominant, recessive, homozygous and heterozygous. It has a few slides on PTC paper tests (discussion, place to share and a great video). It teaches about Punnett squares (how to set them up, examples, and videos). I even created my OWN Among Us Youtube videos for this DNB to show to set up and use a Punnett Square with a AMONG US theme. *Links updated 4/13/23* Teacher Presentation pairs with Student Note Packet |
EVOLUTION
This DNB includes Darwin's Voyage, a brief overall of evolution (simple CHANGE OVER TIME), natural selection, adaptations and acritical selection.
